ALFRED Maritime & MEYER EMS: Frequently Asked

Who is ALFRED Maritime?

ALFRED Maritime is the digital spin-off from MEYER shipyards. We combine extensive shipbuilding excellence with IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and AI expertise to make ships smarter, more transparent, and significantly more efficient.

What is the MEYER Energy Management System (MEMS)?

MEMS is an AI-based platform designed to act as a „digital energy assistant“ for a ship’s crew. It collects real-time data from various onboard systems to provide actionable insights that help reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
MEMS is developed in collaboration with the Energy Efficiency Team at Meyer Turku shipyard (www.meyerturku.fi). The application is specifically designed for passenger ships – focusing not only on propulsion, but also on hotel side of cruise ships or ferries.

How does the application help reduce emissions?

The system uses machine learning and simulation models to predict a ship’s performance. By providing the crew with real-time recommendations on how to optimize power usage—from propulsion to hotel loads—it directly reduces fuel burn and, consequently, CO2 output.

What makes MEMS different from traditional monitoring tools?

Unlike standard data loggers or energy analytics, MEMS is predictive. It doesn’t just tell you what happened; it uses weather forecasts, itinerary data, and AI modeling to tell you what will happen, allowing the crew to make proactive adjustments.

What is the approach to user experience?

We designed the interface to be intuitive, requiring minimal training. Our goal is to reduce „data fatigue“ for the crew by presenting only the most relevant, actionable information. The application empowers users and guides their decision-making without prescribing the user what to do.

How does MEMS assist with Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings?

The system tracks a vessel’s CII in real-time. Crucially, it provides a year-end as well as three year forecast of your rating (A–E). Based on extensive analytics, it is possible to evaluate actions to improve CII rating.

How can MEMS help with emissions reporting?

MEMS is collecting the relevant data on fuel consumption, engine loadings, etc. to calculate greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. CO, NOX, SOX).

Why is MEMS particularly useful for cruise ships?

Cruise ships are „floating cities“ with massive hotel loads (HVAC, lighting, potable water, etc. ) that don’t stop when the ship is in port. MEMS specializes in managing these complex, non-propulsion energy demands, which are often the key to maintaining a good CII rating and bringing down overall fuel consumption.

How is MEMS integrated with existing onboard systems?

Our IIoT experts work with you to integrate MEMS with your existing systems onboard. In particular, the automation system of the ship (Valmarine, Valmet, Siemens, etc.), sensors and other systems can be connected, depending on the data needed on your vessel. Typically, it will consume hundreds of I/O points of components across the vessel. The standard integrations protocols that can be used are Modbus or OPC-UA.  The final goal is to have comprehensive analytics and predict energy flows onboard.

Is this only for new MEYER ships?

Retrofits and installations on new builds for any ship are possible. While we have deep roots in MEYER’s shipbuilding, the platform is designed to be scalable and can be integrated into a wide variety of complex vessels to improve their digital footprint and operational efficiency.

What are the core values of ALFRED Maritime?

At ALFRED Maritime, we bridge the gap between traditional shipbuilding heritage and the digital future. Our work is guided by three fundamental principles:

  • Trustworthiness (Maritime Reliability): We understand that a ship is a high-stakes environment. Our solutions are built on the longstanding expertise in cruise ship construction of the shipyards and the legacy of engineering excellence. We provide „industrial-grade“ AI that you can rely on for critical decision-making, ensuring data integrity and cyber-secure operations.
  • Innovation (Digital Foresight): We don’t just monitor the present; we predict the future. Based on precise IIoT data, we utilize machine learning and artificial intelligence. We are committed to continuous evolution, ensuring our partners always have the tools to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations.
  • Customer-Centricity (The Crew-First Approach): We design for the people who actually use our systems. Our „Digital Energy Assistant“ is built to reduce the workload of the crew, not increase it. We listen to our partners to ensure our platform solves real-world operational challenges, providing tailor-made insights rather than generic data.
